During the First and Second World Wars, Cheltenham in common with many towns converted buildings to VAD hospitals. VAD stands for Voluntary Aid Detachment, a civilian unit that provided nursing care for military personnel in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. Cheltenham had eight VAD hospitals of which four are illustrated on the postcards below.
